Course Highlights
This program is for aspiring teachers and for all students with a desire to learn more about Yoga theory, practice, and philosophy. Dhyana Yoga is a Registered School through the Yoga Alliance and our graduates are internationally recognized for their excellence, and for the excellence of this course. Our own standards exceed the national standards for Yoga Training Schools in both the amount of hours we provide (250 as opposed to 200) and the scope of topics covered (asana and beyond!). We believe every student is a teacher for tomorrow, and are committed to pouring ourselves into this program in order to pass on absolutely everything we know to our trainees. All you need is the desire to deepen your understanding of Yoga and enough time to study with loving teachers. We also believe in giving trainees ample practice teaching time to become as comfortable as possible leading Yoga classes.
The natural urge to share Yoga is inside each one of us, and this program gives you the tools, language and a map that works so you can reach others in an effective manner. We have proudly graduated over 450 teachers in 9 years of hosting this Teacher Training course, who now teach around town and around the world at Yoga studios, gyms, retreat centers, spas, and more! 95% of the teachers at Dhyana Yoga have graduated from this program, and we are humbled and proud of their shining achievements.
We have designed this course, which has evolved over 10 years, to provide you with a comprehensive cross section of information all Yoga Teachers should have, including modules in all of the following areas :: 1. Yoga Anatomy 2. Asana Clinics 3. Hands on Assists and Adjustment Clinics 4. Chakras 5. Meditation 6. Pranayama 7. Bandhas 8. Philosophy :: Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads; Vedanta 9. There is an art to teaching and weaving together the tapestry that becomes an elevated Yoga class! This specific program presents the exact skills you need to reach students in an authentic, aligned, meaningful way. Yoga offers healiing and transformation in all aspects of your life when practiced consistently, with care and enthusiasm, over time. We will give this map to you in a very accessible manner, so that whether you plan on teaching right away or not, you have an abundance of information.
Our days together are a mix of in depth study (philosophy, etc) and practice (asana, clinics). A sample day on the syllabus in the weekend course would look like this :: Friday night 6-9pm, Philosophy, Satsang (discussion), Saturday 10-1:30 Asana Clinic (deconstruction & understanding of selected poses) & full practice, 1:30-2 Lunch, 2-6 Anatomy Module, Sunday 10-12 Meditation Instruction, 12-1:30 full practice, 1:30-2 Lunch, 2-6 How to do Physical Assists
Dhyana Yoga's program is set apart from other programs of this kind because we have spent 10 years running this course and honing our skills as Teacher Trainers, plus carefully refining the topics presented. We offer more hours than others, well beyond the national standard required, so that we can spend more time with you and so that you get more time to practice teaching. Additionally, our trainers are the most experienced in the area, all having more years practicing, full time teaching and advanced certifications of their own. Dhyana began practicing in 1989 and has completed teacher trainings in the following :: Ashtanga Yoga w/ Tim Miller (Ashtanga Yoga Center, San Diego, CA), Kundalini Yoga w/ Yogi Bhajan (Yoga West, Los Angeles, CA), Primordial Sound Meditation (Chopra Center, San Diego, CA) and Ayurveda (Chopra Center, San Diego). John Vitarelli began practicing and teaching in the early 90's, then did his formal certification at Dhyana Yoga in 2006 and has also completed the Ashtanga Yoga teacher training w/ Tim Miller. Alex Holmes took one of Dhyana Yoga's first Teacher Training programs in 2004 and has since completed Prana Flow Yoga Training w/ Shiva Rea (Los Angeles, CA), plus has an extensive background in dance and movement, and advanced studies in Anatomy. Jordanna Rock-Garden first studied at Dhyana Yoga as well in 2005, and has gone on to achieve certifications in Ayurveda and specializations in Yin Yoga, plus has graduated from the Advanced 500 Hour Jivamukti Yoga teacher training (New York, NY). 500 Hour Advanced Dhyana Vinyasa teacher training
Next Program Dates
January 20th - December 16th, 2012
Course Highlights
This is an advanced teacher training for Yogis and Yoginis who have already successfully completed a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification and are ready to step deeper into all that is Yoga, as well as a chance to spend more time in community with the support of the teachers and other students. We will build upon the foundational gifts of a 200 Hour Training and add layers to that information.
Bring yourself into alignment! Connect with your internal rhythms and the rhythms of the Universe! Expand your awareness! Allow the ancient teachings to reveal themselves to you! Transform your life while helping others! Infuse your practice with Spirit!
In this training you will experiencing higher states of consciousness through mind-body healing techniques led by Dhyana. You will be shown regular, daily, practices that will support your mental and physical health from deep study in how to practice meditation and the practical application of Ayurveda in your life. As part of the 500 hour training, you will go through a special ceremony with Dhyana to discover YOUR OWN personal Primordial Sound Mantra, meaning, you will find out what your mantra is and be able to use it for the rest of your life. In addition to learning about these topics, you will learn how to teach meditation and Ayurveda as well! Powerful home study processes have been designed to support you on a moment to moment basis as we move through the entire course.
Every class plays a crucial role on your path to unity and wholeness, while providing you with a wealth of information. John will share the physical energetics of proper Asana practice with you in classes on Bandha activation, advanced Asana exploration, and generous time spent exploring the methods of correct Assisting and Adjusting students in Asanas, including Advanced Assists, and the subtleties of assisting in large classes, small classes, or even in private one-on-one lessons. You will be personally working in small groups with John on this important aspect of teaching Yoga, and apprenticing in his regular classes as well, giving you ample experience time plus offering the opportunity for you to co-teach with him, apply what you learn, and receive honest and helpful feedback!
In addition to diving deeper into the topics you have been yearning for more insights into, what makes this particular 500 Hour Teacher Training special is twofold. 1. Our aim is to draw out and amplify YOUR unique talents and voice as a teacher, and 2. We will couple uncovering your strengths with an uncovering of what teaching the perfect Yoga class includes! We highly recommend you attend class with Dhyana Vitarelli or John Vitarelli and speak to us before or after class about your intentions regarding further training. There is a magical thread woven into Vinyasa classes at Dhyana Yoga, an imprint that works and speaks to students on a profound level, and we will unravel it and present it to you in this course. We regularly hear from graduates of our training programs that wherever they teach, their students tell them there is something "special" about their classes and the way they teach. We would love to share the secrets of the Dhyana Yoga style with you!
As a very special part of this program, we will be delving into the following texts (please make sure you have read all the required readings of our 200 hour Teacher Training Program outlined above as well) : The Upanishads (Eknath Eswaran), The Yoga Vasistha (Swami Venkatesananda), Perfect Health (Deepak Chopra, all of Ray Long's anatomy books (see www.bandhayoga.com), and Wheels of Life (Anodea Judith). You will also be co-creating a unique binder of your own with us throughout the program.
